About Barker Mill Estates

The Barker-Mills are a long-established local family with deep roots in southern Hampshire. After 500 years, the family are very aware of their legacy, and as a result they have a strong commitment to supporting and working alongside local communities.

The Barker-Mill Estates comprise several thousand acres of land in Hampshire, which are under the guardianship of the Barker-Mill family with the support of its Trustees. Together, the family and their Trustees continue to manage estates across the lower Test Valley, the New Forest, and parts of Nursling and Rownhams. On the eastern edge of the New Forest the estates cover a 3,000-acre block of land which includes parts of Hounsdown, Eling, Marchwood, Colbury, Ashurst, and Longdown. Barker-Mill Estates also own and manage 1,000 acres of land between Milford-on-Sea and New Milton.

The family trace their ancestors back to the 14th Century and have played a significant role in the area for generations, something that continues to this day through the extensive charitable work of the Barker-Mill Foundation.

Work of the Barker-Mill Foundation on the New Forest Waterside

Since it was established in 1995, the Barker-Mill Foundation has donated in excess of £4 million to local charities, schools, organisations and individuals needing support.

The Foundation makes around 80 donations each year, mainly in the areas where the family has owned land for generations. Recent examples of donations on the New Forest Waterside include:

  • £100,000 in 2017 towards a new community, Scout and Guide hall in Marchwood.
  • £3,000 in 2019 to help safety-proof the 4th New Forest North Eling Sea Scout hut on the edge of the Testwood Lakes.
  • £2,500 in 2018-2019 to the Totton and Eling Youth FC to purchase new equipment and hire facilities.
  • £2,000 in 2019 for a new Men’s Shed in Totton to help combat loneliness and isolation.
